The shortest wait times for radiation treatment in Ontario. Breast cancer diagnoses within 16 days—down from 46. Five nurse navigators to guide patients. Advanced treatment technologies and cancer surgeries performed right in our community. A single point of access for cancer care.
All of these—and much more—are the result of 10 years of the Carlo Fidani Regional Cancer Centre at Trillium Health Partners’ Credit Valley Hospital site.
Our cancer centre—serving 2.4 million people of the Halton and Peel Regions—was established to meet an important need for cancer services in our community. Now, ten years later, our cancer centre is one of the top cancer centres in the province.
Caring for the Whole Person—From Diagnosis to Survivorship
What fundamentally makes our cancer care exceptional is our people—and our commitment to patients.
From clinicians to nurses to physicians, our cancer care team treats people, not just their diseases. We are people focussed, not disease focussed. “We see people as more than their tumor,” says Dr. Craig McFadyen, Program Chief and Medical Director of Oncology.
Indira discovered a lump in her breast just days after her son finished pre-school. “I remember thinking about how much I wanted to see him graduate from college,” she recalls.
Genetic tests revealed a gene that made her susceptible to breast and uterine cancers. She chose to have a double mastectomy and oophorectomy at the Credit Valley Hospital site—the second largest surgical oncology program in Ontario—and has remained cancer free.
“THP gave me peace of mind. I didn’t have to think of anything—all my appointments were arranged for me by a Nurse Navigator, here, in my community.”
Carlo Fidani Regional Cancer Centre—Continuous Care Improvements
Out of 14 cancer centres in Ontario, Cancer Care Ontario named the Carlo Fidani Regional Cancer Centre a Top-Performing Hospital for reducing radiation treatment wait times—a direct result of our program’s focus on screening and rapid diagnoses.
Our Diagnostic Assessment Programs—for breast, hepato-pancreatic-biliary, prostate, and thoracic cancers—substantially shorten wait times and improve the patient experience because they permit a greater range of treatment options.
Advanced Technologies—Important Partnerships
Advanced technologies and crucial partnerships are helping us provide essential cancer care for our community.
Last year, THP added brachytherapy for targeted radiation treatment and three new TrueBeam linear accelerators for precise imaging and radiation delivery that results in safer treatments for patients.
THP is committed to delivering the best cancer care for all patients—children to seniors. We are home to the largest of the seven Paediatric Oncology Group of Ontario satellite clinics, in partnership with SickKids Hospital, so that parents do not have to travel to downtown Toronto for their kids’ care.
In 2011, just 27% of women in our region who needed gynaecological cancer surgery received it. In 2014, that number increased to 80%, demonstrating our commitment to advanced and accessible cancer care in our community.
