A New Kind of Prenatal Care

Advancing our Women’s Health program

421Trillium Health Partners delivers more babies each year than any other Ontario hospital—over 9,000 babies every year (or one an hour, every day of the year).

“Our Women’s and Children’s Health program endeavours to give each and every newborn the healthiest start possible,” says Dr. Peter Scheufler, Medical Director and Division Head of Women’s Health at Trillium Health Partners. “Early investment in children’s health results in improved long-term health for families.”

Because of the size of our program, our hospital has developed a part-time High Risk Pregnancy clinic for women requiring more comprehensive prenatal care. Last year, our clinic had over 6,000 patient visits and over 50 referrals a week. Demand has surged in pace with the rapid growth of our community (we have more children than any other region in Canada).

Trillium Health Partners recently launched the Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) program to provide comprehensive care for growing families. “Our vision was to establish a program that would incorporate the High Risk Pregnancy clinic and also provide comprehensive care for mothers throughout all stages of their pregnancies,” says Dr. Scheufler.

The MFM program—the only one of its kind between Toronto and Hamilton—will use a collaborative care model by which various health care providers will be synchronized like an integrated team and will include obstetricians, radiologists, an endocrinologist, a dietician, and social worker, among others.

Dr. Nan Okun will serve as the inaugural Director of the program. Dr. Okun is a highly regarded Division Head of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto. Dr. Okun will treat patients and consult in the ongoing establishment and development of our new program.

Trillium Health Partners proudly welcomes Dr. Okun to our growing community, where she will be a valued contributor to our hospital’s mission of advancing a new kind of health care for a healthier community.
