Scotiabank Bed Race raises $150,000 for mental health at Trillium Health Partners

MISSISSAUGA – Perfect weather and a record-breaking crowd of 4,000 helped make the third annual Scotiabank Bed Race in support of Trillium Health Partners (THP) a remarkable success on Sunday, June 7 – with $150,000 raised for the hospital’s mental health services.

“We’re thrilled to have celebrated another successful Bed Race in support of our hospital,” says Steve Hoscheit, president & CEO, Trillium Health Partners Foundation. “Community support is a huge vote of confidence for our doctors and support staff, as well as those facing mental illness. Mental health is a critical area of focus for our hospital and with our community’s support, we can continue to grow this area to increase access and services to those in need. We can’t thank Scotiabank and our community enough for their incredible support in this year’s event.”

Nineteen teams decorated and raced their custom-designed beds in costume through Mississauga Celebration Square, while spectators enjoyed many activities in the Square. The Hasty Market Kids Zone was filled with many child-friendly activities that included a stroller derby, bed-making contest, entertainment on wheels by Circus Jonathan, inflatable bouncers, face painting, a colouring contest and many giveaways. During the races, attendees enjoyed a BBQ lunch, hosted by Scarlett House Catering and Pizza Pizza, as they watched Gwen Stefani and Katy Perry tribute acts, dancers and live music from Nightfly on the main stage, and singer/songwriter Michael Theodore returned as emcee.

“Scotiabank is committed to making a difference in our communities,” says Oliver Uppal, District Vice-President, GTA Mississauga/Oakville, Scotiabank. “We are proud to support the Bed Race event and are confident that the dollars raised will have an important impact on those utilizing the important services offered by Trillium Health Partners.”

Funds raised will support the mental health program at Trillium Health Partners. One in five Canadians will experience mental illness in their lifetime, the other four will know someone who does. Trillium Health Partners is the largest provider of mental health services in West Toronto and Peel region, offering care across all age groups.

Ninety per cent of those admitted to Trillium Health Partners for mental health-related issues enter through THP’s Emergency Departments, the busiest in Ontario. The hospital recently built a dedicated mental health zone at the Mississauga Hospital and is now building something similar at the Credit Valley Hospital site, as part of its redevelopment and expansion project. Funds raised through the Scotiabank Bed Race will be directed towards this area – ensuring the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Trillium Health Partners Foundation and Trillium Health Partners Volunteers would like to thank the community for their continuous generosity and incredible support, and to Scotiabank for being partner sponsor for the third year in a row.
