Children’s health and wellness form a central part of Trillium Health Partners’ strategic plan. Early investment in children’s health results in improved long-term health for families. As part of our commitment to providing the best start children can get in our community, Trillium Health Partners is now a designated ‘Baby Friendly’ hospital.
The Best Possible Start at Life
The Baby Friendly designation is granted by the Breastfeeding Council for Canada (BCC) to health organizations that promote practices that support informed infant feeding decisions, particularly breastfeeding. Breastfeeding provides numerous health benefits for babies and mothers, including better, convenient, more affordable nutrition for babies, increased bonding between mother and child, and protection against illnesses for mother and child.
A Six-Year Effort
This designation will mark the culmination of a six-year effort to implement the 10 Baby Friendly best practices into daily patient care across our three-site hospital. Only six other hospitals in Ontario have achieved this important distinction. Our hospital’s goal is to increase the rate of mothers who begin and continue to breastfeed exclusively for the first six months of the baby’s life for the best possible start at life.
Surveyors from the BCC visited our Credit Valley Hospital and Mississauga Hospital sites to determine our hospital’s readiness for full accreditation. Staff, clinicians, volunteers, and learners were interviewed to ensure that they were aware of our breastfeeding policy and related resources.
This important designation is another example of the many ways that Trillium Health Partners is advancing a new kind of health care for a healthier community.
