MISSISSAUGA – Trillium Health Partners is pleased to announce that Dr. Kerry Kuluski has been appointed as the inaugural Dr. Mathias Gysler Research Chair in Patient & Family Centred Care and Scientist at the Institute for Better Health.
In this role, Dr. Kuluski will grow a research program to evaluate and improve the patient and family experience for our community and beyond. Through collaborations with patients, caregivers, providers, staff, community and academic partners, Dr. Kuluski will support the advancement of patient-centred outcomes measurement. She will also address equity challenges in underrepresented populations to improve experiences, outcomes and the integration of health services.
This Research Chair is the result of a growing collaboration between University of Toronto (U of T) and Trillium Health Partners (THP) and will advance research to ensure Trillium Health Partners and the broader health system continue to address the diverse needs of our growing community by putting patients first in the design and delivery of health services.
Dr. Kuluski is an applied health services researcher and social worker by training and is currently an associate professor at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at U of T. She received her PhD in Health Services and Policy Research from U of T followed by a Postdoctoral Visiting Fellowship at the University of Oxford. She spent 9 years at Bridgepoint Hospital (Sinai Health System) developing a research program on patient and caregiver experience. Her work includes the largest patient and caregiver study on alternative levels of care in Canada and leadership on the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) study to implement person-centred community-based primary health in Ontario, Quebec and New Zealand.
The Research Chair in Patient & Family Centred Care is named in honour of Dr. Mathias Gysler, a nationally renowned obstetrician, gynecologist, fertility expert and former Medical Chief of Staff of Credit Valley Hospital. Throughout his career, Dr. Gysler dedicated himself to improving the care experience for women and families across the world, both in hospitals and communities. A true pioneer in his field and fearless leader, Dr. Gysler unfailingly led by example and was relentless in his advocacy for patient rights. He was among the first physicians at THP to support the pregnancies of same sex couples and women with HIV and was responsible for shaping the home and baby program. This Research Chair has been established to pay respect to his life’s work and advance research that will address the needs of patients, families and caregivers.
The Dr. Mathias Gysler Research Chair in Patient & Family Centred Care has been made possible through the generous support of our donors. Trillium Health Partners Foundation is grateful for the support from our donors to fund research and foster innovation to shape better experiences and health for the community.
