Mississauga, Ontario – Today, the Kaneff family is making a significant donation to Trillium Health Partners in support of the future redevelopment and expansion of Mississauga Hospital. Kristina Kaneff, daughter of the late Dr. Ignat Kaneff, announced the donation on behalf of the family to honour the life and legacy of their father, who set an example through his belief in the importance of community development and health care, on what would be his 95th birthday.
Dr. Kaneff came to Canada in 1951 with only five dollars in his pocket and almost no understanding of English. He worked in construction before starting his own company building houses for immigrants. In 1955, just four years after he came to Canada, Dr. Kaneff made his first major philanthropic donation when he pledged against his future earnings to support the development of Mississauga’s first hospital. This was the lead gift, and 20 times larger than the second largest gift.
To honour the memory of Dr. Kaneff on his birthday, October 6, the Kaneff family has made a significant donation toward a new Mississauga Hospital, a gift that builds on his remarkable first donation, and will benefit future generations.
“Our father embodied the spirit of giving throughout his life,” said Kristina Kaneff. “Throughout his life, he shaped the skylines of both Mississauga and Brampton and supported numerous causes to ensure the success and wellbeing of others. This gift is being made by our family to continue honouring his life and legacy by combining his passion for city building with his support of Mississauga Hospital.”
“On behalf of Trillium Health Partners Foundation, I would like to express my gratitude to the Kaneff family for their generous contribution,” said Caroline Riseboro, President and CEO, Trillium Health Partners Foundation. “Dr. Kaneff would be proud of his family for their generosity in support of the redevelopment and expansion of Mississauga Hospital”.
“The redevelopment of Mississauga Hospital is critical to the long-term health of our community,” said Karli Farrow, President and CEO, Trillium Health Partners. “The redevelopment will support Mississauga’s diverse and rapidly growing population, and we couldn’t do it without the generosity of families like the Kaneffs.”
As Mississauga has grown, no hospital in Ontario has experienced greater demand for health care services than Trillium Health Partners. During the pandemic Trillium Health Partners cared for one of the highest volumes of COVID-19 patients in the province often in parts of the Mississauga Hospital that were built 60+ years ago. A redeveloped and expanded Mississauga Hospital meeting modern health care standards is part of THP’s plan to meet the growing needs of the community.
