Toronto philanthropists donate $5 million to Trillium Health Partners

Gift established the Gordon and Donna Feeney Centre for Seniors’ Medical Psychiatry

MISSISSAUGA – Trillium Health Partners is proud to announce a $5 million gift from philanthropists Gordon and Donna Feeney that will help transform how health care is delivered for seniors. The hospital celebrated this generous donation on Monday, May 30, where the signage for the new Centre was unveiled.

The Feeneys’ investment will enable Trillium Health Partners to establish the Gordon and Donna Feeney Centre for Seniors’ Medical Psychiatry, a new centre that will support seniors with co- occurring mental and physical illness. This will include coordinating access to appropriate screening, diagnosis and treatment sooner to avoid undue suffering and help seniors to live longer, healthier lives. Trillium Health Partners currently receives over 1.6 million patient visits a year; 37 per cent of whom are seniors, many presenting with a combination of medical and psychiatric illness.

“We are exceptionally grateful to Gordon and Donna for their continued investment in seniors’ mental health care,” said Michelle DiEmanuele, President and CEO, Trillium Health Partners. “With their support we are working to integrate the needs of the body and the brain and help seniors living with mental and physical illness get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.”

“Mental health care, and in particular the research and treatment of mental health illnesses, has long been an interest and concern of ours,” says Gordon Feeney. “I spent my whole career working with people and I saw firsthand how devastating mental illness can be for individuals, families and even colleagues. What Trillium Health Partners is doing, especially through the Medical Psychiatry Alliance, to improve care across the system, and to provide support for families and seniors here in our community, is something Donna and I are excited and proud to witness and support.”

This $5 million gift is a further investment in seniors’ care by Mr. and Mrs. Feeney. In 2011, the Feeneys donated $1 million to enhance and expand Seniors’ Health & Wellness programs at Trillium Health Partners, including seniors’ mental health care.

“Gordon and Donna Feeney are caring, compassionate leaders actively working to make our community a better place,” comments Steve Hoscheit, President and CEO, Trillium Health Partners Foundation. “Being able to properly address the very specific needs of our seniors is an important focus for us and with Gordon and Donna’s generosity, we are improving access to coordinated care, reducing stigma and providing much needed support.”

The Gordon and Donna Feeney Centre for Seniors’ Medical Psychiatry will incorporate clinical care, medical education and applied research as part of Trillium Health Partners’ work within the ground-breaking Medical Psychiatry Alliance, a unique partnership between the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, The Hospital for Sick Children, Trillium Health Partners and the University of Toronto.
