Tour de Bleu Cycling Event Raises Record $4.7 million for Trillium Health Partners

Mississauga, On – Tour de Bleu, the annual fundraiser hosted by Mattamy Homes and the Peter Gilgan Foundation, took place this past weekend and raised an astounding $4.7 million in support of the Seniors Care Program at Trillium Health Partners (THP) – the largest amount raised to date by the event.

After postponing the 2020 event due to COVID-19, Tour de Bleu welcomed a group of more than 60 cyclists who, on September 12, 2021, completed the final portion of their ride from scenic Muskoka to Mississauga, all in support of improving health care services for seniors in our community and beyond.

Never has there been a more important time to support seniors care at THP. Over the next 20 years, THP will experience more demand for care than any other hospital system in the province, largely driven by seniors. Most live with two or more complex conditions and comprise more than two thirds of THP’s current patient population, with the total number of seniors in the region set to more than double in the next 20 years.

The Peter Gilgan Foundation chose to support the hospital through Tour de Bleu because of their belief in the people of THP, who are committed to innovation and exceptional patient care and who have, since March of last year, been on the front lines of the pandemic.

“The huge success of the event means the world to our staff and physicians,” said Karli Farrow, President and CEO of Trillium Health Partners. “COVID-19 highlighted our need for more accessible, equitable care, especially for those who are elderly. Tour de Bleu’s record gift will ensure that we can continue to innovate in order to provide exceptional care that meets the needs of our seniors.

The funds raised through this year’s Tour de Bleu will help create new innovative service models for seniors, including an expanded virtual platform, to provide connected, accessible care to our aging community.

“We are thrilled to partner with Trillium Health Partners and support a new kind of health care for a healthier community. Seniors today face many challenges,” said Peter Gilgan, Chairman and CEO of Mattamy Asset Management and founder of the Peter Gilgan Foundation. “It’s a pleasure to invest in a hospital that is helping to lead the charge toward more equitable and accessible virtual health care.”

Now in its 16th year, Tour de Bleu has raised close to $30 million for notable charities such as SickKids Hospital, William Osler Health Centre, Markham Stouffville Hospital, the Mattamy National Cycling Centre, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Women’s College Hospital, and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

Caroline Riseboro, President and CEO of the THP Foundation, added, “The generosity of the Peter Gilgan Foundation and all of the riders, donors and sponsors of this year’s Tour de Bleu is especially timely and most appreciated. We are immensely grateful to all involved with this year’s event – you are playing a crucial role in helping us transform health care for a healthier community today – and for generations to come.”
