$1 million gift makes program possible for youth and adolescents battling mental illness
MISSISSAUGA – Trillium Health Partners Foundation is pleased to announce the official launch of the RBC Paediatric Mental Health Urgent Care Program at Trillium Health Partners.
“We’re so grateful for organizations like RBC Foundation who continue to make a difference in critical health care priorities at Trillium Health Partners,” says Steve Hoscheit, president & CEO, Trillium Health Partners Foundation. “RBC has made a major step forward with their significant investment in the RBC Paediatric Mental Health Urgent Care Program. Programs like this will help make a significant impact in our paediatric population – an important area of focus for our hospital and a tremendous overall benefit to our region. RBC is a philanthropic leader in the field of mental health and their work getting this program off the ground demonstrates their exemplary commitment to our community’s future, as we lead in the implementation of innovative paediatric programming.”
The program was made possible by a $1 million gift generously donated by RBC Foundation last year. Children and youth will benefit from a program that will provide dedicated consultant rooms and a core staff of paediatric mental health care experts accessible at Trillium Health Partners. These experts will provide the essential care needed in response to a growing volume of children and adolescents, currently underserved.
The program will reduce non-emergency and paediatric mental health emergency admissions; create improved access for working families with children and reduce wait times.
“We are proud to support this program though the RBC Children’s Mental Health Project,” says Shari Austin, Executive Director, RBC Foundation & VP Corporate Citizenship. “We are extremely confident in the team here at Trillium Health Partners, and we know that they and this program will make a huge difference in the lives of many children, youth and their families.”
Timely and appropriate intervention is essential for young people dealing with mental health issues. The prevalence among Canadian children and youth is already 15-20 per cent and increasing. Paediatric mental health Emergency Department (ED) visits at Trillium Health Partners are up by one-third in just the last three years. Even with the rising demand, the alarming reality is that just 1 in 5 children in need of mental health services actually receives care. The RBC Paediatric Mental Health Urgent Care Program will help address this increasing demand.
“Over the past five years, our hospital has seen a 66 per cent increase in visits from youth,” says Dr. Rose Geist, Chief and Medical Director, Mental Health, Trillium Health Partners. “Urgent mental health care is care provided at the time when the need is most acute in a setting that creates the environment for optimal outcome. The RBC program will enable us to respond to young people and their families during a mental health crisis. When ongoing care is the next step in treatment, we will help facilitate referral to the best possible community partner. With improvements to urgent mental health care, we will prioritize the coordination of services in order to ensure the right care, in the right place, at the right time – helping our youth and their families in crisis receive the treatment they need when they are the most sensitive and responsive to treatment.”
